Faculty of Mass Media Communication

The Faculty of Mass Media Communication, University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius was founded in the academic year 1997/1998. It strives to implement theoretical knowledge through its approach to students and by actual practice. The wide focus of its activities and various practical specializations enable the students to choose their study from two programs: mass media and marketing communication.

The students are systematically made ready for a profession in media or the marketing field from the beginning of their studies. In this respect, the faculty has achieved a unique arrangement in the structure of Slovak universities.

Central information related to a course of study:

Following the recommendations of the Accreditation Committee and the statement of the Ministry of education, FMK UCM Trnava was permitted the right to provide university education in the following fields:

Study program: mass media studies
§ mass media communication
§ marketing communication
§ media relations
§ applied media studies

There is the possibility to study the following programs at the faculty in full and part-time enrolment:
§ Mass media communication (KOMU) Bc. /Mgr./ PhD. Marketing communication (MARK) Bc./Mgr./PhD.
§ FMK UCM in Trnava was given permission to implement rigorous procedures in the curriculum of mass media communication, marketing communication (titl. PhDr.)
§ FMK UCM in Trnava was given permission to conduct habilitation and internship program in the Media studies field (titl. doc.)
§ FMK UCM was given the right to bestow professorial appointments in the Media studies field (titl.prof.)

In terms of a bachelors degree, the students obtain necessary theoretical and practical knowledge in order to address various tasks of a media study program. The bachelor study culminates with a state exam.

The graduate of the bachelor’s program can continue his or her studies at the faculty with a 2nd grade of study; the master’s program.

For the master’s degree, the student obtains a wide and deep knowledge of a selected field and extensive practical knowledge in the selected field. The master degree ends with a state exam and work internship.

In terms of the education level of a graduate, the professional and academic faculty soundness are declared in both study programs. In terms of duration, philosophical knowledge, methodology of scientific work, sociology management, theory of mass media and marketing communications are being strengthened.

MASSMEDIA COMMUNICATION

Characteristics of the study program
The graduates of the study program in mass media acquire knowledge regarding communication theory, philosophy, aesthetics, and history of culture. They will be acquainted with theories of mass media, its system and structure, its economics and management, particular fields of journalism and its development. They achieve practical knowledge in dealing with technology structure and the creation of informative, culturally sensitive and artistic communications. The students learn to manipulate these elements through software programs and audiovisual broadcasts using modern electronic media such as television, radio, video, and the internet.

Additionally, psychological, sociological, ethical, political, and legal knowledge is provided to the students. Two foreign language requirements are an integral portion of the program. The specialization of a students‘ mass media program starts from their 2nd year of study. It is deepened in the advanced classes and degrees of study, in the scientific knowledge fields and dramaturgic, directional and media psychological acting, in the internet and multi media communication. The students become familiar with methodological work by being able to work in theoretical institutes or creative artistic teams of various mass media.

MARKETING COMMUNICATION

Characteristics of the study program
The main role of this study program is as follows: cultivating a graduate who is focused on task solution in the fields of media management, marketing, public relations, and advertising agencies. The student achieves fundamental economic, philosophical, legal, and media knowledge related to those professions during the course of study. 
At the application level, the student is made familiar with media informatics, marketing, management and market economy.

The graduates´ knowledge of this study program has an interdisciplinary character. It integrates the knowledge of modern information technologies hand=in=hand with market familiarity and communication abilities. The graduate has information and knowledge based on a wide theoretical/technological foundation of communication systems, economic and media analysis, and the psychology of the communication process. The student understands how to use the methods of artistic and team work. The profile of the study program is molded by knowledge and abilities associated with the use of the methods and processes of media management, marketing and control of artistic processes.

MEDIA RELATIONS

Characteristics of the study program
The term media relations in professional public is understood as regular communication with the media, maintaining a good relationship with journalists who are interested in the issue of the company or public institution. The resulting publicity – neutral, positive or negative in critical situations – is primarily the result of the quality of these relationships. Relations with media are based on the production and provision of information that attracts the attention of relevant media about the topic and consequently the interest of recipients of media content for a company, organization, its products or services. The term media relations in the narrow sense also represents creating good relationships with other subjects involved in media communication (passive or active).

APPLIED MEDIA STUDIES

Characteristics of the study program
Students of Applied Media Studies acquire basic knowledge in the interdisciplinary areas of mass media studies, educational sciences and disciplines such as social, human, economic and legal sciences. The result is the knowledge of media in the context of specific situations in the diverse spectrum of educational institutions and outside them. An attractive, creative and socially necessary study programme aims to prepare professionals who are able to mediate careful exploration of media, their possible impact, influences and methods of protection against them. The goal of the study programme is the development of critical thinking competencies, value-based selective and responsible approaches to media and successive application of these competencies in relation to an individual and society.
