Institute of PBaMR

(Institute of Physiotherapy, Balneology and Medical Rehabilitation)

Graduates from the bachelor’s study have mastered the basic investigative and therapeutic procedures and methods in physiotherapy, balneology and therapeutic rehabilitation. They will carry out highly professional activities within preventitive, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative institutions, sanatoriums, home nursing care agencies, medical physical education and physical therapy.

The study systems are mainly based on lectures, but also on individual study, too. The study program is measured by the ECTS system.

These were the major brave plans of his Magnificence and the whole management of the UCM in Trnava who decided to establish the Institute of physiotherapy, balneology and therapeutic rehabilitation with a location in Piestany. In Slovakia, there is no other place like Piestany, with such a comprehensive understanding of rehabilitation, since only this world famous spa town offers unique study possibilities.

At its 20th meeting on September 21–23, 2006, the Accreditation Committee of the Slovak Government advised the Minister of education to entitle the University of SS Cyril and Methodius the right of granting a university degree “Bachelor” (Bc.) to the graduates from the full-time and extramural 3 year study program in Physiotherapy.

Prevention, assessment, therapy and rehabilitation in the treatment of diseases in all systems of the human body, with special consideration of their functioning constitutes the content of the study branch. Therapeutic exercise, motion treatment, as well as all kinds of physical therapy and balneology are also included.

To be able to pursue this profession, each undergraduate has to obtain a broad specialized profile during the three-year course of study, for which a prior general education is needed. In addition, an undergraduate should possess logical thinking, the ability to work independently as well as in a team, be willing to learn continually and increasingly master the profession.

The main priorities of the balneological and therapeutic rehabilitation field are the following: to relieve or withdraw functional restraints, to lower the level of interdependence, to shorten hospital care, to improve quality of life, as well as to maintain social reintegration of patients.

According to the plan of development of the Institute, we will have from September 2012 the right of granting a university degree “Bachelor” (Bc.) to the graduates from the full-time and extramural 3 year study program Radiology assistant and Public health. So in the future we are planning to open the second university degree “Master of physiothehrapy”. After opening the Master study, the Institute of physiotherapy, balneology and therapeutic rehabilitation in Piestany will become a faculty with a unique medical study program in Slovakia.
