About the university

Rector’s speech

The University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius (UCM) provides education in bachelor, master and doctoral study programs in different fields of the humanities and social sciences, in physiotherapy, teaching, as well as in chemistry and biotechnology. Graduates of mass media and marketing communication and physiotherapy have been ranked among the most successful experts in the labor market. Graduates of the faculty of natural sciences usually find their occupations in the field and the best ones continue in doctoral studies. The graduates of our university are provided with solid fundamentals for practice. Our university is a dynamic and prospective educational institution with interesting and modern study programs. Studying at the University of Ss Cyril and Methodius is an opportunity for students to develop in the whole range of academic, social and cultural dimensions.

The main aim of UCM is to protect and spread knowledge and to develop education on the basis of scientific knowledge and creative scientific and artistic activities while keeping the national and general human and democratic traditions. UCM has been contributing to the development of education as a part of culture of the whole society and thus it has participated in the improvement of the scientific, technical, economic and cultural standards of society. The university is focused on the education of highly qualified graduates mostly in the fields of social, economic, medical, legal, natural, humanities, pedagogical and historical sciences.

UCM has been developing a 130 year-long tradition of university education and research in the town of Trnava. And therefore it is very important that our “alma mater” is soon going to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its establishment. Our ambition is to achieve the highest level of the quality of education. We have been constantly trying to provide our graduates with the conditions that cope with the demands of the present labor market. We realize the value of practical education in cooperation with partner organizations and thus we offer the students an opportunity for a smooth inclusion into professional spheres in many fields of interest. The expansion of our activities and implementation of many measures has been rewarding and fruitful.

The university status makes great demands on pedagogical, research, artistic and managerial work of academic and administrative employees and, of course, on the study work of the students. Questions of evaluation and maintaining quality have been increasingly important.

We have to stress the university status every day also in the context of our social and civil activities. We have always to keep in mind a reputation of our university as it is connected with academic ethics. According to a moral code we are obliged to maintain rules like honesty, justice and fairness to achieve good relationships, a pleasant working atmosphere and thus to gain the trust of the public at large. The approval of a new ethical code is considered to be very important. It is supposed to be a compass that will help us find the way to cope with the increasing demands of specialized professional education corresponding with the demands of the contemporary labour market; but also the way to maintain general education which is important for producing a new generation of critical thinkers.

The main activity of the university is education. At our university, comprising four faculties and one institute, there are currently 5915 students in 68 accredited study programs both internal and external. We have been involved in twelve VEGA and six KEGA projects, two projects in Applied research and four projects of the Agency for support of research and development. We participate in 5 EU projects, three of them are financed by the European Social Fund in the Operational program of education and two of them are supported by the European Fund of Regional Development. We have also participated in three international scientific research projects since 1 January 2011. There are also eleven grants covered by the town of Trnava. Two projects are in the Central European exchange program for university study in the CEEPUS program, one project of cooperation with the JAVYS Company was initiated in the department of biotechnology at the Faculty of Natural Science UCM and one project financed by the Orange Foundation has been operating in the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts UCM.

I believe that our students will remember their period of study at the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius as a stimulating and prosperous part of their life. I am certain that a good guarantee for my desire is mainly the current staff on all the levels of our institution.
