Recipients of the National Scholarship Program, CEEPUS, and ERASMUS+ have become insured under the state mandatory health insurance.

With effect from 1st January 2023, according to the amendment to the Act on Health Insurance 580/2004 Coll., recipients of the National Scholarship Program, CEEPUS, and ERASMUS+ have become insured under the state mandatory public health insurance if the scholarship is awarded for a period of more than one month.

A foreigner (if not insured otherwise) who stays on the territory of Slovakia and is a scholarship recipient within a program approved by the Government of the Slovak Republic, or within a program implemented based on an international agreement or within a program of the European Union (CEEPUS and ERASMUS+), or within a program implemented according to a special regulation, and if such a person is awarded a scholarship for a period longer than one month, becomes an insured person under the state mandatory public health insurance.

The information and a list of eligible programs are available on the website of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport.

The mandatory health insurance for National Scholarship Program, CEEPUS and ERASMUS+ recipients is free of charge.

However, since the amendment to the law has only recently come into force, the health insurance providers offering public health insurance have not yet fully adjusted to this change. Therefore, please contact your chosen health insurance provider by phone and inquire about how to register for public insurance and what documents are needed. Conditions may vary for individual insurers.

There are currently three health insurance providers operating in Slovakia offering public insurance:

Dôvera - registration is possible only in person at their branch office

VšZP (Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa) - via application form in Slovak language, electronic application form in Slovak or in person at their branch office

Union - via electronic application form in English - https://www.union.sk/online-registration-uzp/#/selection-of-insured-person, or in person at their branch office

If you have decided to fill out the application form in Slovak via VšZP:
