Soil literacy as a pathway to sustainability: the LOESS project brings together experts from across Europe

Published: on 30.4.2025

Soil is one of the most precious and vulnerable natural resources. Although it forms the basis for food security, biodiversity and climate stability, it is often overlooked in social discourse.

The international project LOESS - Literacy boost through an Operational Educational Ecosystem of Societal Actors on Soil Health seeks to change this situation. It aims to increase soil literacy across Europe, from kindergartens to universities, as well as among the general and professional public.

The project is building an innovative educational ecosystem that connects educators, scientists, students, municipalities and NGOs to raise awareness about the importance of soil and soil conservation.

International meeting in Athens

At the beginning of April, a consortium meeting of the LOESS partners took place in Athens, at the Greek Chamber of Commerce of Piraeus. The University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava was represented by Marta Kuhnová, Project Manager of the LOESS project.

The event, which was organized by the Greek project partner APOPSI, created a space for exchange of experiences, discussion on the ongoing outputs, interim report and next steps in the project. In the coming period, the partners will focus on increasing the visibility of the project and targeted information campaigns.

Project outputs available today

The LOESS project has already produced a number of practical tools and outputs that are available to practitioners and the wider public, for example:
