John from Kenya spent a whole semester with us: I met a lot of really good people in Slovakia

Published: on 12.5.2025

In our country he was surprised especially by the All Saints Day - in Kenya they avoid cemeteries.

John Ngotho Kinyua is a PhD student in the Department of Social and Development Studies at Mount Kenya University in Kenya. He spent the whole winter semester at the University of St. Cyril and Methodius (UCM) in Trnava thanks to the Erasmus+ programme. So if you are toying with the idea of what it would be like to experience Erasmus in Kenya, perhaps this interview with John will help you decide.

How did you hear about the Erasmus opportunity?

I am currently doing my PhD at Mount Kenya University in Kenya, in addition to working as a lecturer at the university. I knew that our school has a partnership with UCM, so I was very familiar with the program. When I noticed an announcement on the university's website about the opportunity to apply for Erasmus+ for students, I jumped at the chance.

However, I actually visited Slovakia in May 2024 for two weeks to check if it was even possible to come.

You can read the full interview with John on the Atteliér magazine website.
