Speech by the Rector on the occasion of International Women's Day
Published: 8.3. 2025
Dear colleagues, dear students,
Today we mark International Women's Day to highlight not only the long journey that women have come in the fight for their rights, but also their invaluable contribution to our university, society and future generations.
At the University of Saints Cyril and Methodius, we deeply value every woman - whether she is a teacher, researcher, administrator, cleaner, janitor or student. Your work, talent, and perseverance shape not only the academic environment, but also the values upon which our University stands. Thanks to you, UCM is a place of innovation, development and mutual support.
Women play an irreplaceable role in society - they are the creators of the future, the bearers of knowledge and valuable ideas. As scientists, they push the boundaries of knowledge, bring new discoveries and find solutions to the challenges facing the modern world. Their research and innovations have a profound impact on medicine, technology, environmental science, the humanities and many other fields. Without their dedication, curiosity and creativity, our world would not be what it is today.
Unfortunately, despite the progress we have made, gender equality is still not a given. Even in the academic environment, we face challenges that require our attention and active solutions. Equal opportunities for all, equal conditions for career development, respect and a safe working environment are values that should not just be an ideal, but a daily reality.
Today, therefore, we not only celebrate women, but also call for further work in favour of equality. We can all be part of the change - by supporting our female colleagues, respecting different perspectives and building an inclusive academic environment.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, we have also prepared a discussion entitled Gender (in)equality, to which we cordially invite you to join us on 11 March at 18.00 in Little Berlin. We hope that this discussion will bring inspiring ideas and open up an important debate on the status of women in academia and society.
Dear ladies, I wish you to be confident, successful and to feel valued in every area of your life. Your work, your voice and your dreams are important. Thank you for all that you contribute to the development of our university and society.
I wish you a wonderful International Women's Day!
Sincerely
Rector of UCM in Trnava Katarína Slobodová Nováková
