The biggest modernization of UCM since its foundation: the University enters a new era

Our alma mater is experiencing the biggest renovation in its 27-year history. Renovations have affected the campuses on Skladova Street, Námestí J. Herdu, Hajdóczyho, Bučianská Street, as well as the university workplace in Piešt'any.

Why is this special for our university?

This year, renovation work is taking place simultaneously in all key buildings, representing an unprecedented modernisation of the entire university infrastructure. This includes classrooms, laboratories, technical equipment, information systems, as well as common areas for students and staff. The aim is to move UCM to the level of a modern European university, which is not only an educational, but also a technological and research centre.

Modernisation is not just about new windows and floors, but it is a fundamental qualitative shift that will improve the conditions for study, research and everyday life of the university community. UCM is thus becoming an institution ready for the challenges of the 21st century, including digitisation, interdisciplinarity and internationalisation.

Herdu with a new face: better spaces for students and staff

The building on J. Herdu Square in Trnava is undergoing extensive renovations that will increase comfort for both students and university staff. The entrance area will be renovated, several classrooms and offices of the UCM Faculty of Arts and the Rector's Office will get new windows and air conditioning. The modifications to the dormitory areas, which are based on student requests and suggestions, include the replacement of floor coverings, the installation of pigeon nets, improved Wi-Fi signal coverage and freshly painted rooms and corridors. New air handling units are being installed in the basement of the building to allow full use of the theatre and other already renovated rooms. In the next stage (next year) specialized workplaces of the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Informatics of the UCM will be established here. On the first floor, the dean's office of the UCM FPF will be modernised to provide more functional facilities for the faculty administration.

Bučianska Street in a new look - replacement of roofing and complete renovation of the interior spaces

The building of the Faculty of Social Sciences of UCM on Bučianska Street has received a new roof, which solved the long-standing problem of leakage. In addition, almost all of the faculty's interior spaces will receive a new coat of paint, more colour and a fresher look to improve comfort for staff and students alike.

New PC classroom and garden on Skladová Street

A new computer classroom will be built in the FMK UCM building on Skladová Street and two other classrooms will undergo a complete renovation to meet the requirements of modern teaching and the development of students' digital skills and competences. In Block A, light fittings will be replaced, motion sensors will be installed in the corridors and inappropriate glass panels will be replaced, reducing the building's energy load while improving comfort during lessons.

In addition to the internal improvements, we are also preparing a new exterior rest and relaxation area - we will change and renovate the appearance of the adjacent garden so that students will be able to find peace and space to relax outside of class. All renovation work is paid for from the faculty's own resources.

Reconstruction of the former secondary school building in Piešt'any

In April 2025, the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava started the reconstruction of the historical building of the former Secondary Industrial School of Electrical Engineering on the SNP Square in Piešt'any, which will serve the FZV UCM and thus complement the infrastructure of our campus in Piešt'any. By the end of 2026, a modern academic and research environment, including a simulation centre, will be created on approximately 2,000 m², which will enhance the quality of practical training for students. Once the renovation is completed, the building will serve as an institutional base for around 1,500 students from the academic year 2026/2027. In addition, we have completed the modernisation of the courtyard and created paved areas for parking in the current building used by the Faculty of Health Sciences on Rázusova Street.

Renovation of the building on Hajdóczy Street: new classrooms and library

We will soon start extensive renovation of the building on Hajdóczy Street. The modernisation will affect both the exterior and the interior - we will insulate the exterior, replace the old windows with more energy-efficient plastic windows, add new classrooms, and students and teachers can look forward to new spaces for a modern library, co-working spaces and a study room. The entrance to the building will be accessed through the OKO cinema after the refurbishment, which will simplify access and connect all the spaces.

New laboratories in Špačince

At the FPV UCM campus in Špačince, the extension of new laboratory spaces will start this summer. We will create modern laboratories and facilities for researchers focused mainly on biotechnology and chemistry, which will significantly strengthen the scientific and research infrastructure of the faculty.

The renovations are mainly funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and to a lesser extent by the University's own resources. UCM together with the University of Trnava joined the project of the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic for support in the strategic development of university infrastructure. From the call of the Ministry of Education they received more than 22 million euros. A total of 20 investment activities are planned within the strategic development of universities, of which UCM plans up to 14 investment activities. Both universities based in Trnava are implementing the purchase and reconstruction of buildings, as well as the harmonisation of quality systems and the creation of joint study programmes within the framework of the project.

Due to the scope of the work, the start of the 2025/2026 academic year has been exceptionally postponed to 6 October 2025. This will ensure that the University will be able to allow students and lecturers to enter the new phase in already prepared, higher quality and more functional premises.
