Graduates of the 1st degree in Philology (study programme: 7357 Foreign Languages and Cultures - English Language and Culture in Professional Communication) will acquire the professional skills/competence for the performance of their profession or will be prepared to continue further studies at university. Graduates of Level 1 are awarded the academic degree of Bachelor (Bc.) (Section 52(5) of Act No 131/2002).
Graduates of the first cycle possess primary language skills at the level of communicative sufficiency, both in written and oral form; they have superstructural skills, such as the specifics and principles of translation, a conceptual apparatus and basic theoretical knowledge of linguistics, literary science and intercultural communication.
The graduate of the study programme acquires:
1. Knowledge:
The study programme is aimed at preparing the student to acquire general theoretical and professional knowledge, to acquire and develop practical skills and abilities necessary to carry out translation activities, advanced communication in various professional fields; to enhance creative abilities through participation in organised student learning and research activities. The student has mastered the fundamentals of linguistics, literary and cultural disciplines, as well as practical skills in courses aimed at developing proficiency in the English language at an advanced level.
2. Skills:
The purpose of study in this program is for the student to acquire generalist, general vocational, and specific vocational skills. These consist in the quality training of future professionals as required by today's modern labour market and in line with the requirements of the new information age.
The graduate of this programme is proficient in receptive skills (listening, reading) and productive skills (speaking, writing) in the English language. He/she acquires the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in a theoretical and practical way in an independent and creative way.
3. Professional competences:
The graduate of the study programme English Language and Culture in Professional Communication is proficient in the conceptual apparatus of linguistics, literary science and professional language (e.g. professional communication in business English, professional communication in health care, professional communication - law, etc. The student also has a basic knowledge of translation strategies and an understanding of intercultural communication behaviour.
4. Transferable competences:
The graduate of the first degree programme English Language and Culture in Professional Communication is able to work in a team and be part of a teamwork; in translation activities he/she knows how to compile translation and terminology memory using translation tools such as Memsource.
Memsource is creative on the lexical level in managing websites and advertisements; it applies creativity in translation, checking and revision of translation texts; it can process documents for the management of organisations of any organisational and legal form, prepare and produce information material; use, process, translate and proofread professional texts in various fields.
The graduate of the study programme is able to carry out work activities in the field of contact with foreign clientele within the development of cultural-economic relations with foreign countries, in translation activities as an assistant translator - he/she is able to implement and correct the translation of professional texts in the field of business English, law, healthcare, tourism, assist in intercultural communication in various spheres of communication, facilitate intercultural communication, find employment in cultural and educational institutions, foreign or international companies in the field of customer service, respectively. It can be used in the field of customer service, advertising, tourism, financial sector and public relations.
