Marketing, media, design, or the gaming industry? The Faculty of Mass Media Communication is expanding its range of study programs

In addition to its established programs, the faculty has recently introduced several new initiatives and innovations that reflect current trends in the media and creative industries.

These include, for example, a professionally oriented program designed primarily for graphic artists and designers, as well as a joint program with the University of Trnava—future graduates will thus receive a joint degree from both universities.

Theory is complemented by extensive practical experience

Across all departments and programs. Marketing students gain knowledge and skills not only from renowned faculty members but also from respected external lecturers working at advertising and digital agencies such as PS: Digital, TRIAD Advertising, Wiktor Leo Burnett, and Inspirations Minar. Future marketing gurus can get involved in the student agency Kabinet kreativity, where they work on real-world projects from actual clients under the supervision of experienced mentors (they even won gold at an international competition in Brussels for a campaign promoting responsible alcohol consumption among young people), or participate in agency, PR, or client “safaris.” The Design Thinking method is also used in teaching, and the FMK boasts a unique neuromarketing laboratory.

The faculty responds flexibly to current trends in media practice, and the curriculum for mass media students includes practice-oriented required electives and elective courses—sound, editing, camera work, basics of 3D animation, creative writing, interpretive speech, and much more. It also hosts dozens of domestic and international experts and prominent figures from the media, press agencies, associations, and other media institutions every year.

New Degree Programs and Innovations

In addition to traditional degree programs such as mass media communication, marketing communication, and digital game theory, the faculty is gradually expanding its offerings to include new programs that respond to the current needs of media and creative practice.

Since last year, the curriculum has included Digital Design—a professionally oriented program focused on graphic design, branding, UI/UX, and visual communication in the digital environment. This is a natural choice for creatively oriented students who wish to pursue careers in graphic design, digital design, or the creation of visual brand identities.

Another new addition is the upcoming Advertising and Consumer Psychology program, which the faculty is implementing in collaboration with the University of Trnava. During their studies, students will take courses at both universities and, upon graduation, will receive a joint diploma. The program focuses on a deeper understanding of consumer behavior, marketing research, consumer insights, and strategic communication planning—areas that are particularly crucial for careers in advertising agencies or corporate marketing.

A new Public Relations degree program, taught in English, is also in the approval stage; it builds on the existing media relations program. It is the only degree program in Slovakia focused exclusively on the field of PR—organizational communication, reputation building, and crisis communication. The faculty will announce the application deadline in March.

Another innovation in the existing Applied Media Studies program is its transformation into the Digital Competence and Responsibility program. The program focuses on navigating the digital world, media literacy, critical thinking, working with artificial intelligence, and understanding how digital platforms function.

Are you drawn to video games?

In the Digital Games Theory course, we’ll help you navigate the current state of the gaming industry, enable you to understand the specifics of how it operates, and prepare you for further development in your chosen area of interest. We have the TEDI Bears esports team, the UniCon gaming festival, and regular game jams. In addition, our students are involved in Game Jam Plus, an international gaming incubator and accelerator, where they create their own games and attract investors. Students train at a specialized esports center—the first of its kind in Slovakia.

Creative minds will also find their place here

If you have a creative spirit and see yourself in the creative industries, you’ll find your place here. You can work for one of the faculty’s media outlets or attend photography workshops—all under the expert guidance of industry professionals.

Aspiring journalists can join the editorial staff of Slovakia’s best university magazine, *atteliér*, as evidenced by the awards it has won in the *Štúrovo pero* student magazine competition. The faculty television station, FMK TV, brings students interesting programs every week, all produced by the students themselves. You can put your voice to the test at aetteri, Slovakia’s first student radio station with its own frequency.

Do you write short stories or poetry rather than journalistic pieces? You can put those skills to use in creative writing, and each year the best pieces are selected and published in Muuze, the FMK students’ creative yearbook. Photography enthusiasts can work in three photo studios and present their projects at the Ľudovít Hlaváč Gallery, which has been operating for more than ten years.

The Faculty Is Always Buzzing

Various events, popular among both students and faculty, are held regularly at FMK. Science and Technology Week is dedicated annually to current topics in the worlds of media, marketing, and gaming. Athletes can enjoy themselves at the legendary Ski Trip, while film enthusiasts can attend Frejm—a student film and game festival. In addition, there’s FMK Day, Vjamnoce, and numerous discussions and gatherings throughout the year.

FMK is the alma mater of many successful journalists, media experts, marketers, hosts, spokespersons, and professionals working at advertising, marketing, and PR agencies, as well as game studios and development teams. If you want to join them, don’t hesitate to submit your application by the end of April.
