Invitation to a lecture from the series I want to know more: Parachutes and placebos: the secret life of academic writing

The UCM Doctoral Academy invites you to a lecture by prof. Mgr. Ildikó Matušíková, PhD., entitled Parachutes and placebos: the secret life of academic writing, which will take place on May 15, 2026 at 13.00 via MS Teams.

After a series of seminars dedicated to academic writing skills, research ethics, methodological rigor, data analysis validity and the principles of scientific publishing, we will conclude this academic year with a view from a slightly different perspective. Through iconic satirical scientific articles, we will look at how persuasive academic writing is created, how scientific argumentation works and why humor can be a surprisingly accurate tool for critical thinking in science. In absurd but brilliantly constructed studies, we will show the structure of a scientific article, the language of academic argumentation, methodological pitfalls and the power of style and rhetoric. The lecture is intended for doctoral students and all other interested parties who want to write better, think more precisely and discover that academic writing can be not only rigorous, but also intellectually exciting and entertaining.

The lecture will be led by Prof. Mgr. Ildikó Matušíková, PhD., molecular biologist working at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Moravia in Trnava. In her scientific work, she has long been devoted to the molecular physiology of plants exposed to various environmental stresses. She has worked in several foreign research institutions and is the author of more than a hundred scientific publications, which have received more than 1,200 citations.
