Did you miss the Evening University on Critical Thinking? Here are the 4 most important conclusions we came to

The ideas were presented at the last Evening University of this academic year, a discussion format that aims to present socially important topics through the eyes of UCM experts and interesting external guests.

The event took place on Tuesday, 15 April, in the premises of the Little Berlin in Trnava. It was about why we as a society have reached a point where we can question even basic scientific facts, how the way we think is changing in the age of social media and spreading misinformation, and how critical thinking can help us in all this, we talked to Beata Balogová, editor-in-chief of the daily SME, Monika Prostináková Hossová, educator and media education expert, Samuel "Vedátor" Kováčik, theoretical physicist and science populariser, and Ondrej Schütz, director of the Slovak Debating Association. The discussion was moderated by Branislav Oprala, lecturer from the FMK UCM.

Read 4 important insights that our respondents brought to the Critical Thinking at Risk discussion:

  1. What is critical thinking? Critical thinking is the ability to question one's own views. It means that I always have the ability to change my mind about things I believe in. (Ondrej Schütz).
  2. Is it still worth discussing in a polarised society? If one is open to the possibility not to change one's mind, but at least to look at the matter from a different point of view, we should be open to communicate. (Samuel "Vedátor" Kováčik).
  3. The media must control: One of the fundamental roles of the media is to check power, not just to inform. How will the next generation control power if they cannot focus enough on longer content as a result of watching social media? (Beata Baloghová)
  4. What's next? We are educating future adults in schools and we need to prepare them for what the future holds, and education needs to prepare them for that. In particular, so that young people know how to navigate the world and how it works. (Monika Prostináková Hossová)

The next Evening University will not take place until the new academic year 2025/2026.
We will inform you about the date and time on the UCM website and social media.
