People have plenty of information about how to look after themselves, but many fail to put it into practice. Read 6 of the most interesting insights from the How to be Healthy in the 21st Century discussion

These ideas were presented at the seventh Evening University, a discussion format aimed at presenting socially important topics through the eyes of experts from UCM and interesting external guests.

The event took place on Tuesday, December 2, at Malý Berlín in Trnava. Dominika Doktorová, a psychologist and educator from the Department of Psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy at UCM, Milan Sedliak, an expert in the physiology of physical activity, sports nutrition and regeneration from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport at Comenius University, and Ondrej Machovič, a physiotherapist and internal doctoral student at the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCM, who is engaged in research in the field of psychosomatics and neurology. The discussion was moderated by Šimona Tomková, a journalist for Denník N and a graduate of the Faculty of Mass Media Communication at UCM.

Six most interesting ideas that came up during the discussion How to be healthy in the 21st century:

Compared to the past, a large part of the population has sufficient information about how to take care of themselves physically and mentally, yet many are unable to apply this knowledge in practice (Dominika Doktorová).

  • The causes of physical problems in the current generation cannot be explained solely by the well-known observation about sedentary lifestyles. The population is beginning to lack overall physical fitness. Many people then try to compensate for their lack of exercise with overly strenuous and inappropriate forms of exercise, which cause them injuries (Ondrej Machovič).

  • The key to healthy eating is variety. It doesn't have to be every day, but we should try to alternate between different types of meat and other foods. If a client who only eats a few types of food comes to me, I send them to a psychologist because it is a real problem (Milan Sedliak).

  • The best indicator of a lack of exercise is our memory. In order to use it effectively, we need at least 45 minutes of exercise in the fresh air every day (Dominika Doktorová).

  • Scientific studies show that the most effective form of healthy weight loss for beginners is a combination of light exercise—for example, ten thousand steps a day—supplemented by strength training (Milan Sedliak).

  • Strenuous physical activity is generally not recommended before bedtime. On the contrary, we should calm our bodies down in the evening. Morning training is much more suitable, for example, instead of routinely scrolling through social networks (Ondrej Machovič).

The next Evening University discussion will take place again in the upcoming summer semester.
