Applied Biology (Master's)
- Field of Study: Biology
- Form of study: FULL-TIME
- Degree of study: 2nd, Master's
- Duration of study: 2 years
- Teaching language: Slovak
The basic characteristic of the applied biology study program is its interdisciplinary nature, primarily within the framework of linking modern biological subjects (with an emphasis on microbiology, virology, molecular biology, including genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics) and biotechnological, ecological-environmental and chemical disciplines. However, it also includes social science, socio-economic, technological, moral-ethical and managerial connections of the above-mentioned areas. The aim of the study program is to prepare a graduate capable of independently, creatively and comprehensively solving problems of an interdisciplinary nature and, in the new conditions of the development of science, technology and informatization, to develop and apply knowledge related to sustainable development with regard to the determinations and specifics of the relevant region in the form of training of new educated and erudite personnel, the implementation of scientific works, the performance of an employee in the decision-making sphere, or the implementation of innovative technology in production practice and business support.
Graduates of the Applied Biology program (2nd degree) have knowledge of biological scientific disciplines, they also have knowledge of frontier scientific disciplines and can use biological and chemical methods in solving practical tasks.
Graduates of the study program will acquire the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge, experience and habits that will enable them to:
- understand essential facts, principles and theories in biology
- to know the connections between biology and other natural sciences
- to be able to navigate natural disciplines
- have basic knowledge of them and be able to obtain, sort, process and use in-depth information from the relevant databases
- to use them in solving basic and applied biological research tasks
- to be able to interdisciplinary research and get to know the essence of natural technical and social processes taking place around us
- have the ability to make decisions when solving problems and proposing measures
- be able to design and process innovative measures and changes in practice into documentation form
- create projects, obtain project coverage and successfully implement them in practice
- purposeful use of existing and newly acquired knowledge of others as well as one's own to creatively search for solutions that objectively advance the current state in the field of sustainable regional development.
After completing the master's degree, the graduate of the study program can continue his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the UCM in Trnava within the framework of the Molecular Biology program, or at other faculties with a similar focus.
Graduates of the Biology department (2nd degree) can find employment in a wide range of workplaces with a biological, biomedical and biotechnological focus in research teams, as well as in independent work with a research and technical focus (SAS, universities, departments of health, agriculture and forestry, food industry, environment, etc.).
They are prepared to meet the requirements of specialized institutions requiring work in the field, primarily at workplaces dedicated to modern biotechnology (recombinant DNA technologies) as well as environmentally-ecologically oriented workplaces, and are also used in state and local government institutions and in private companies with a research-technological orientation.

Admission Requirements for Full-Time and Part-Time Study
Applicant Requirements, Selection Process, and Recommended Personal Attributes
Number of students admitted to the study program: 30
The basic condition for admission to the study of the second degree study program is the completion of the first degree study program (according to § 56 paragraph 2 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Universities and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts).
The admission procedure takes place without an entrance exam.
When being admitted to the chosen study program, the fact is taken into account whether the applicant completed the study program at FPV UCM in Trnava or at another university of a related field. The result of the bachelor's study is evaluated during admission to the master's study program. In the case of applicants from other faculties and completing a bachelor's degree in related fields, the composition of completed subjects in the first degree is also evaluated. When being admitted to the master's degree program in applied biology, it is recommended that a student complete the subjects molecular biology and microbiology at the bachelor's level of study. In the case of completing a bachelor's degree in related fields, the FPV admissions committee may require admission exams. More information here.
