Five educators, twelve days in Egypt, endless experiences. We invite you to the opening and book launch of Welcome to Egypt, my friend
Egypt comes to life through the eyes of educators from the Faculty of Mass Media Communication at the University of Moravia in Trnava in a photographic exhibition and book titled Welcome to Egypt, my friend. They capture the land of the pharaohs, bustling streets, monumental monuments, and everyday moments they experienced during their Erasmus+ mobility.
The authors of the project Vladimíra Jurišová, Peter Lančarič, Igor Piatrov, Matej Martovič and Denis Javořík spent less than two weeks in Egypt at the turn of February and March 2026. They visited several places that shaped the country's history and present. The main goal of the trip was a visit to Mansoura University, the second largest university in the country with more than 120,000 students, where they discussed the possibilities of academic cooperation and exchange of experience.
In addition to the work program, they also got to know the cultural heritage of Egypt - from the busy streets of Cairo and the pyramids in Giza to Luxor, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings or a cruise on the Nile.
Egypt outside the holiday resorts
It was from this trip that the publication Welcome to Egypt, my friend was born, which through photographs and personal observations captures Egypt outside the holiday resorts. It is not a tourist guide or a professional report from a business trip. The book offers an authentic view of a country full of contrasts, history, everyday life, but also unexpected situations that its authors experienced firsthand.
The project also includes a photo exhibition of the same name, which will present a selection of images taken during mobility. It captures Egypt as the authors came to know it - in its magnificence, overcrowding, beauty and dirt, in everyday life and unexpected encounters.
The title Welcome to Egypt, my friend is a greeting and a hint of irony at the same time. For visitors, it represents an invitation to discover Egypt outside of the holiday resorts, and for the authors, it is a reminder of everything they experienced during the twelve days - from the quiet sunsets over the Nile to the busy streets of Cairo to the moments when the Egyptian reality managed to fascinate them as well as surprise them.
Five authors, five different perspectives
The exhibition and the book connect not only a common path, but also different authorial optics. Egypt appears here as a mosaic made up of analog snapshots, documentary views, critical reflection on tourism and aestheticized mobile photos. The result is a visual dialogue between different photographic approaches, media and ways of talking about one country.
The opening of the exhibition and the ceremonial launch of the book Welcome to Egypt, my friend will take place on Monday, June 22, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. at Náměstí J. Herdu 2 in Trnava. The exhibiting authors are Vladimíra Jurišová, Peter Lančarič and Matej Martovič. The curators of the exhibition are Denis Javořík and Igor Piatrov. The entire group of mobility participants contributed to the publication.
The exhibition and the publication of the book were supported by the Department of International Relations of the UCM. All interested students, university employees and the general public are cordially invited to discover Egypt as the authors of the project got to know it during their trip.
