Prof. Sedláková from FPV UCM opens the door to the world of science and nature for children

Published: on 30.9.2025

It is never too early to start teaching natural sciences and technical subjects – quite the contrary. The sooner children encounter science in a playful and understandable form, the more naturally they will develop curiosity and respect for the world around us. But how can complex scientific topics be transformed into an adventure that will excite children and draw them into the mysteries of nature? This question is answered by Prof. RNDr. Jana Sedláková, PhD., who works at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava and is a renowned Slovak scientist behind the unique GREEN µ THEATRE project in Košice.

A theater where microorganisms come to life

The project combines science, art, and education. Children aged 10–12 immerse themselves in the micro world through interactive lessons led by professional puppeteers, where they meet friends—microorganisms and metals. Thanks to puppets, playful stories, and simple explanations, they can better imagine how nature works, understand why it is important to recycle, and how individuals can contribute to nature conservation.

"Our goal is to awaken children's curiosity and joy of learning. If they understand how microorganisms are involved in the nutrient cycle and, figuratively speaking, in recycling, they will learn to respect nature, and it will be easier for them to understand why it is important to take care of our planet," says Prof. Sedláková.

World-class scientist

Prof. Sedláková is one of Slovakia's most prominent scientists. The prestigious Stanford University and Elsevier ranking lists her among the top 2% of the world's most cited scientists (2020, 2022–2024) in the fields of engineering, mining, metallurgy, and environmental sciences. Her research combines industry with the principles of sustainability – from raw material processing and biotechnological processes to environmentally friendly technologies.

With the aim of providing practical solutions in the field of green technologies, she founded ALGAJAS s. r. o., which has attracted considerable interest from foreign partners in both academia and industry. In addition to her scientific work, she also works as a university lecturer, guiding students towards independent thinking, curiosity, and the search for innovative solutions for a sustainable future for our planet.

Projects such as GREEN µ THEATRE prove that science does not have to be boring and distant. On the contrary, it can be playful, engaging, and inspiring. Jana Sedláková believes that if children understand the importance of sustainability and nature conservation at a young age, they will become adults who act responsibly in the future.
