University to award honorary degree Doctor honoris causa to prominent linguist
The University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava will honor a significant figure in world science – Professor Mgr. Rudolf Leger, PhD. The ceremony will take place on March 31, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the Jozef Matúš Auditorium on the university premises on Bučianská Street in Trnava.
Professor Rudolf Leger is one of the leading German linguists who has been dedicated to the research of African languages for a long time. Since 1985, he has been working at the Department of African Languages at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, where he was appointed professor in 1993.
During his academic career, he has also worked at several important foreign universities, including Göttingen, Zurich, and Naples. He is currently retired, but continues to teach and teaches Fuldish.
In his scientific work, he focuses mainly on the grammatical analysis, morphology, and classification of Semitic-Hamitic languages in Africa, as well as on research into the influence of Arabic on the African linguistic environment. He is the author of hundreds of professional studies and monographs, and his publishing activities focus mainly on the linguistic specifics of Fulfulde, Cup and Hausa.
A significant part of his work consists of extensive research projects and field trips in Africa, as well as solving international grant tasks. Thanks to his expertise, he is one of the recognized personalities of the world of African studies.
Close cooperation in Trnava
He is connected with UCM by many years of intensive cooperation. As a significant collaborator of the Department of Ethnology and Non-European Studies of the Faculty of Arts of UCM, he has completed several lecture stays and professional internships in recent years.
He has participated in the education of students at the master's and doctoral levels, is actively involved in international projects, acts as an Erasmus coordinator and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Ethnologia actualis. He regularly organizes professional lectures in the field of African studies and African languages at the university.
The award of an honorary degree is an expression of recognition for his extraordinary scientific contribution, as well as for his long-term cooperation with our university. At the same time, it represents an important moment for strengthening international academic relations and supporting excellence in research and education.
