
The first rector of UCM, Prof. Ján Szelepcsényi, has passed away
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Ján Szelepcsényi, composer, diplomat, educator, and first rector of St. Cyril and Methodius University in Trnava.
A native of Rajecké Teplice, a graduate of musicology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Comenius University and conducting and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, he was an important figure in Slovak culture. He worked as a choirmaster and conductor of several choirs and orchestras, composed music for dozens of feature films and documentaries, created numerous choral compositions, and participated in the organization of cultural and music festivals.
He was the author of several books, the first ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Turkey, later vice-rector of the Academy of Performing Arts, and in 1997 he became the founding rector of the newly established University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, where his vision and work laid the solid foundations for today's university. For his contributions to the development and promotion of Slovak culture, he was awarded the Golden Double Cross in 1995.
