Prof. Miertuš pôsobí vo výskumnej a univerzitnej oblastií viac ako 47 rokov, najskôr na Slovenskej akadémii vied v Bratislave, potom na Fakulte chemickej technológie Slovenskej technickej univerzity v Bratislave (1989 riadny profesor) Od roku 1990 posobil v Organizácii spojených národov pre priemyselný rozvoj - Medzinárodné centrum pre vedu (UNIDO-ICS) v Terste v Taliansku  najprv ako expert a v rokoch 1998 – 2010 ako riaditeľ pre oblasť chémie a biotechnologíiíí,   v r. 2002 - 2003 aj ako zástupca výkonného riaditeľa a výkonný riaditeľ centra. Tu viedol programy v oblasti Katalyzy, biopalív a boisenzorov; Biodegradovatelných plastov, Remediačných technológií, a Kombinatorialnej chémie, navrhovania a vývoja nových liečív. Pôsobil tiež na univerzitách v Pise, Terste, Miláne (I), Paríži (F) a New Yorku (USA) ako vedecký pracovník a ako hosťujúci profesor. Bol koordinátorom viac ako 40 medzinárodných programov (projektov, konferencií a workshopov) vo viac ako 30 krajinách. V roku 2011 založil v Bratislave nové centrum (International Center for Applied Reseach and Sustainable Technology - ICARST) (v súčasnosti jeho riaditeľ) a od roku 2013 nastúpil aj na pozíciu profesora na Univerzite SS. Cyrila a Metoda (UCM) Trnava, kde pôsobil ako garant  biotechnologického programu (2014 -2017). Pôsobí ako člen Rady pre vnútorné hodnotenie kvality UCM, ako aj člen Správnej Rady UCM. Tiež ako člen vedeckých rád MPOB Kuala Lumpur, Malajzia, LPME Pisa, UCM Trnava, člen World Academy of Arts and Sciences (USA),. držitel viacerých vedeckých ocenení.
Podieľal sa na formulovaní vízie a stratégie nových výskumných programov pokročilých vedeckých centier (UNIDO-ICS, Taliansko; ICARST, Slovensko; MPOB, Malajzia; atď.).  V období (2015 – 2020)  ako organizátor a predseda  Europskych Workshopov UCM – CEI- JRC-EC – ICGEB prispel tiež k analýze splupráce inštitúcií krajím Strednej a Východnej Euróy v rámci EU v oblasti Biotechnológií.
Ako profesor na FPV UCM sa podieľal na príprave a koordinácii študijných programov a projektov v medicínskych biotechnológiách, bioanalytickej chémii a medicínskej chémii, zodpovedný bol za projekt Horizon 2020 ITN IPCOS. Bol koordinátorom prípravy a účasti na projektoch APVV vrátane nových potenciálnych antivírusových liekov, nové biologicky rozložiteľné plasty produkované z obnoviteľných zdrojov. Bol zodpvedný riešiteľ APVV projektu „Nové antivirálne liečivá: Dizajn, syntéze a testovanie aktivity nových špecifických inhibítorov virálnych proteáz koronavírusu SARS-CoV-2“   (2020 -2021).
V rámci medzinárodných aktivít bol organizátorom a predsedom európskych Workshopov ako CEI-JRC European Workshop on Advanced Biofuels, Biorefinery and Bioeconomy (ABBE): A Challenge for Central and East European Countries, held in Bratislava, Slovakia on 25th-27th March 2015, JRC-EC – CEI – ICGEB European Workshops: “Smart Specializations Strategy in the Field of Biotechnologies in Europe: A Challenge for CEE Countries” in 4th – 6th September 2017. „Pharma and Med. BT in Europe“ June 1-3, 2019;  Člen Rady UCM pre vnútorné hodnotenie kvality (2020-2024). V súčasnosti je členom Správnej Rady UCM. 

Prof. Miertuš prispel k rozvoju vedy a nových hraničných disciplín chémie a biotechnologií (s dosahom na a medicínu  a životné prostredie), hlavne v počítačovej a medicínskej chémii, bioanalytickej chémii, biosenzoroch (o.i. pri analýze pollutantov, potravinárskych produktov, a v klinických analýzach), environmentálnych a medicínskych biotechnológiách, k vývoju degradovateľných plastov a biomateriálov s viac ako 270 publikáciami vo vedeckých časopisoch, viac ako 30 knihami, zborníkmi a kompendiami, s viac ako 14 800 citáciami, spoluautor dvch medzinárodných patentov (PCT) a dvoch amerických patentov – na nový koncept biosenzorov. Vedúci mnohých postgraduálnych a doktorandských prác, ktorí sa stali neskôr uznávanými odborníkmi, vytvoril na Slovensku a vo svete uznávanú školu v oblasti vývoja a vývoja liečív, počítačovej chémie, biosenzorov a biotechnológií.
Získal tiež bohaté skúsenosti a zapojenie do európskych rámcových programov EC  FP V FP VII, hodnotiteľ návrhov projektov VII. RP a prebiehajúcich programov ako H2020-ITN-Marie Currie, INTERREG a národných výskumných projektov (Slovensko, Taliansko).
